YMCA Know How to Go Program!

The YMCA came to our EAST Lab and asked for help. They have a new program called ‘Know How to Go’, which gets kids curious about careers and secondary schooling. The Y needs a commercial of how successful the project has been so far for the upcoming National YMCA Conference.  Darbe Gallardo, Taylor Byrd, and Spencer Jones couldn’t wait to help out. They get to interview the kids and workers at the Y starting January 17, as soon as the kids return to this amazing after school program.

TPHOA Website

Team Members: Courtney Koller

TPHOA is nonprofit organization called Twin Points Home Owners Association. For this project, Courtney Koller worked mainly with Tommy Gibbs to develop the website with him, and his company. He purchased a backend server tool to help her manipulate the website to make it the best it could be. This was a new feat for her to conquer, since she had never experienced anything like CPANEL; Courtney used Joomla as the host, by using her already knowledge from training she had received earlier in EAST. Tommy Gibbs wanted something that he could post information on, and could have members read such information. She knew he needed a forum, or something of that nature, to meet his desired website standards. The forum ended up to be a bigger issue than she originally thought, since she didn’t know how to install it. After the website was completed, she gave in-class training for Mr. Gibbs and 3 associates to enable them to use and work the website and forum. In the end, the TPHOA website turned out great, and the forum is functional, and exactly what Mr. Gibbs wanted.

United Way

October 25, 2011 in EAST News, Projects

During the summer past, an EAST student, Bryttani Bartlett, took on a project that would help a greater part of the community. The United Way of Garland County, a non-profit organization that carries out community projects, provides volunteers, and produces funds to support other non-profit organizations, needed a promotional video to send to other institutions to fund the program and to exhibit during speeches and presentations. Bryttani visited Abilities Unlimited, Piney Grove United Methodist Church, and the Chartable Christian Medical Clinic, an institution that serves as a school and workplace for mentally disabled adults, a church that serves as a Project HOPE Food Bank, and a clinic that serves people in the community without proper health insurance to interview people affected by United Way. Using her extensive knowledge of videography and editing, she produced a video worthy of an award. In fact, she did receive an award; she was awarded a certificate of appreciation and encouraged to make another video for the following year. The EAST program takes pride in Bryttani’s great success in helping the United Way of Garland County.

TNN

October 25, 2011 in EAST News, Projects

Every week in EAST Lab, a team by the name of the TNN crew, get together and shoot an information newscast to inform students about the HSHS football teams, local news about what is happening around town, and around our school. The TNN crew consists of Bryan Rosburg, Emmett Hill, and Anna Peterka is the news anchors, Jesse Byrd and Bruin Snider are the editors, and Drake Strong is the audio tech man. They video tape the news in the back room of the EAST Lab, and edit it on the Macs, and have everything ready for broadcast at A & B lunch on Fridays. This is an effort to increase school pride by encouraging students to attend the games, and also to keep them up to date on what is happening in the town.

Solar Powered Car

October 25, 2011 in EAST News, Projects

Hot Springs High Schools science department asked EAST Lab if they would be interested in learning the diagnostics of a solar powered car. The car was initially broken when EAST received it. Students had to fix it to where it operated correctly and then convert it to solar power. The design was created once they had learned the makeup of a solar panel itself and created those from scratch also. Then they had to learn the electrical wiring of the go-cart itself and reroute that from a battery to a solar panel.  The students also did a study on energy conversion with the physical science teacher, creating a hands-on learning device.  The project should be done sometime in mid-November, and is planned to drive across the stage at the National EAST Conference 2012.

Progamming for Poverty

October 25, 2011 in Projects

Steven Starkey, Partheny Hightower, Eric Draper, Eric Bishop, and TJ Phelps are working on a project we like to call Programming for Poverty. These students want to help the homeless who can’t get food at local food pantries because other people are being greedy and going every day and wiping out more than 4,000,000 dollars worth of food before less fortunate can get it. Students learn to work with PHP and MySQL programming. They have to learn to create a database where people can only get service for a certain number of days before they can come back and get more.
